Learners create a mental image from a text read / viewed / heard.
Visualizing brings the text to life, engages the imagination and uses all of the senses.
Example Questions and statements
- What do you see in your mind?
- Describe or draw some images
- Make a mind map of the facts
- Imagine things being different
What is it?
Sketch to stretch is helpful to students who need support with visualizations.
How to do it?
- Students read a text
- Students draw the images that come to mind as they are reading/listening/connecting to the text.
- Students write a few sentences (Or as many as they need.) to explain their drawing. Students use the picture to help guide their understanding of the text.
This was used in a focus group. Students were reading about Ancient Egyptian life. This was an excellent way for them to comprehend and remember important parts of the text.
This was also used in an English lesson where students were reading a section from their class novel. This helped them to remember the characters and the plot, easily.
